The Betsy Boyd Second Year Scholarship was established by Caroline P. Norris in honor of Betsy Boyd, who retired last spring after serving at Pellissippi State for 30 years – the last 20 years as counselor at the Blount County Campus. Caroline Norris was a member of the Pellissippi State English department adjunct teaching faculty from 1990-2004.
“I’ve taught at levels from kindergarten through college for fifty years in four different states, but working as an adjunct professor at Pellissippi State was the most gratifying job I’ve ever had. Even though Pellissippi State is a large public institution, it stands out academically, and people here really care about the individual needs of students. It’s a truly supportive environment,” said Norris.
After a teaching career spanning 50 years, Norris established the Betsy Boyd Second Year Scholarship for students who demonstrate both need and promise. The intent is to provide the assistance necessary for students to successfully complete their community college education.
The scholarship assist second-year Pellissippi State students who have a 3.0 GPA or better and A’s or B’s in the English classes they have taken. The scholarship will provide recipients with $500 awards for both fall and spring semesters.
“I truly hope that this scholarship will provide a boost to students seeking to complete their Pellissippi State educations,” said Norris.
