Hunger is a reality for many Pellissippi State students and their families.
A recent Temple University study found that as many as 36% of the students currently enrolled in college across the United States don’t know if they’ll have enough money to purchase their next meal. That translates into as many as 3,400 Pellissippi State students who are struggling with hunger and food insecurity. This is amplified when you consider that many of our students also have families to feed.
Here at Pellissippi State, we are working hard to change these statistics. Our school’s Food Pantry Program feeds students and their families who can’t afford groceries. Pantry Coordinator Drema Bowers explains, “Each student who comes in is provided with a three to five-day supply for every member of their household of prepackaged food plus fresh produce from our organic garden.”
Pellissippi State Foundation’s 2020 Giving Tuesday theme is “SOS” (Suite of Support) for students. The funds in our Suite of Support are aligned with the College’s focus on holistic student support.
Our four SOS funds have matching gift partners. The Pellissippi Pantry is one of our S.O.S. (Suite of Support) funds. Our matching partner for the Pellissippi Pantry is a very special anonymous donor. The Scarecrow Foundation is also a key donor and community partner that is passionate about the Pellissippi Pantry and our efforts to serve our students who are facing hunger. Get ready to double your donation! Gifts made between November 16, 2020 – December 1, 2020 will be credited toward the GivingTuesday campaign.
