For most of us, Christmas dinner with our families is a holiday tradition. We have plenty to eat and we’ll exchange gifts with our loved ones at this special time of year.
Unfortunately, that is not the case for many college students. A recent Temple University study found that as many as 36% of the students currently enrolled in college across the United States don’t know if they’ll have enough money to purchase their next meal. That translates into as many as 3900 students across our five campuses that are struggling with hunger and food insecurity. This is amplified when you consider that many of our students also have families to feed.
Here at Pellissippi State, we are working hard to change these statistics. Our school’s Food Pantry Program feeds students and their families who can’t afford groceries. Pantry Coordinator Drema Bowers explains, “Each student who comes in is provided with a three to five-day supply for every member of your household of prepackaged food plus fresh produce from our organic garden.”
During this holiday season of giving, would you consider a tax deductible gift to the Pellissippi Pantry? Your gift will provide countless students throughout the year with the assistance needed to ensure that they can concentrate on their studies without the worry of feeding themselves and their families.
