Though scholarship opportunities like the Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect programs exist to help students continue their education, there are other school costs that can prevent students from being successful in their courses. According to a Phi Theta Kappa survey distributed among students across our five campuses in 2020, 57% have had difficulty buying all of their school supplies, 72% have started their semester without all of the supplies needed, 78% do not have a resources available to help with additional school costs, and 69% said they could benefit from school supplies offered through the school. Furthermore, students shared the most common school supply items they need to include pencils, pens, notebooks, folders, and index cards.
To address these needs, Phi Theta Kappa has established a fundraiser in which individuals can sponsor one or more students by donating $20 toward the purchase of a bag of supplies. Each bag will include the aforementioned items as well as highlighters, post-it notes and page tabbers, correction tape, and a 32GB flash drive. All bags will be distributed through the Pellissippi Pantry to individual pantry users on a first come basis. Our initial goal is to raise $3,000 by Spring 2022, which will provide a total of 150 student school supply bags
