Antija’s Faculty Fellow Project Overview
High Impact Practice: First-Year Experience
What if all students entering Pellissippi didn’t have to worry about how they would purchase textbooks? How would completely eliminating that financial burden impact their first-year experience and overall success? Dr. Allen’s project hopes to answer these questions by collaborating with faculty and staff to implement Open Education Resources (OER), which is directly aligned with the mission of the OER Achieving the Dream Degree Initiative. Open Education Resources provide faculty with the power to help students by eliminating the financial and academic barrier of not having access to required course materials. Once implemented, the positive impact on a student’s class performance could be immediate. Also, the funds students would have normally spent on textbooks could be allocated to other necessities, which some students have reported sacrificing in order to buy a textbook.
